Angry about the Impeachment Cover-up?
We are too.

Happy Friday. As you undoubtedly saw on Wednesday, for the first time in 231 years of this nation’s history, the United States Senate abdicated the notion of checks-and-balances, set a precedent for Senate trials with no witnesses, disregarded the Constitution, and officially decided that the President is above the law. While this is normal in a dictatorship, it’s not in the United States of America.
Despite evidence and President Trump’s own admission that he pressured Ukraine to investigate a political rival for his own personal gain, Senate Republicans — including Colorado’s own junior U.S. Senator Cory Gardner — chose to look the other way, letting the most divisive and corrupt President in modern history off the hook.
Despite a groundbreaking admission from former National Security Adviser John Bolton that Trump was indeed pressuring Ukraine to dig up dirt on former Vice President Biden, Republicans blocked Bolton and a number of other key witnesses from testifying before the Senate. So, what is a trial without key documents or witnesses?
It’s a cover-up. Mitch McConnell led a cover-up of unprecedented levels of corruption coming from the President of the United States of America, and Wednesday afternoon, Cory Gardner joined with all but one of his Republican colleagues to ensure Donald Trump would remain in the Oval Office.

That one Senate Republican who voted to convict President Trump on abuse of power was Mitt Romney -- Utah's U.S. Senator and the 2012 Republican Presidential nominee. We admit that we've had many disagreements with Senator Romney -- and were very much against him in the 2012 elections -- but what he did on Wednesday was rare and courageous. He bucked his party when the spotlight was beaming on him, and he put his country first.
For that, Romney deserves thanks and praise -- not the vitriol, mockery, and threats he has since received from members of his own party. If you feel so inclined, give his office a call and thank him. His district office number is (801) 524-4380 and his D.C. office number is (202) 224-5251.
Angry and frustrated? Here's what you can do to fight back.

OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR THE 3RD ANNUAL OBAMA DINNER:
Congressman Hakeem Jeffries!
|
ICYMI: Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has graciously accepted our invitation to be the keynote speaker for the 3rd Annual Obama Dinner!
The Chair of the House Democratic Caucus, Jeffries, who has represented parts of New York City since 2013, sits on the House Judiciary Committee, and was also one of the House impeachment managers alongside Colorado's own Representative Jason Crow!
Congressman Jeffries is an attorney who received his JD from New York University. He is married to Kennisandra Arciniegas-Jeffries, and they have two kids.
Congressman Jeffries made headlines when, during a speech he gave before the Senate on day two of the impeachment trial, he quoted deceased rapper Biggie Smalls, who also hailed from Brooklyn:
“We are here, sir, to follow the facts, apply the law, be guided by the Constitution, and present the truth to the American people. That is why we are here, Mr. Sekulow, and if you don’t know, now you know.”

"What's the High Fivers Club", you ask? It started with a simple idea: There are nearly 1.2 million registered Democrats in Colorado -- what if every single one of them gave just $5 a month to the Colorado Democratic Party (CDP)?
Answer: The CDP would be the best-funded state party in the country -- with zero dollars from corporate PACs and plenty for flipping red seats to blue!
If you haven't given to the CDP yet, here are a few simple reasons why we're asking you today:
- The CDP is the central base that helps recruit volunteers, train candidates, and assist county parties win elections. While the Democratic National Committee provides some limited funds, the reality is it is up to us to raise our own money so we can support Democratic candidates running for office in Colorado.
- We knock on doors and meet with voters to talk about voting Democratic even before we know who our nominees are! As part of the High Fivers Club, you can help us get supplies for volunteers so we can knock on 50,000 more doors before we know our nominee.
- Once we have our nominee, we'll use what we've learned about voters to help them jump-start their Get Out the Voter efforts and stay toe-to-toe with Donald Trump and the Republicans.

Volunteer of the Week: Rich F.
|
Meet Rich -- another rock-star volunteer for the Democratic Party! He took a few minutes to tell us why he volunteers!
My maternal grandmother was able to support her children on survivor's social security benefits after the death of my grandfather in 1958. My mother and two uncles all graduated from college, despite being from a town where many individuals did not finish high school. My grandmother was able to do this despite not having a high school diploma.
The social safety net enabled my family to survive and thrive. Support for the social safety net and other social programs are the reasons why I volunteer with the Democratic Party.

This Week In "Gardner Sells Out Colorado"
|
After announcing last week that he would not vote for any witnesses to appear before the Senate, Colorado's junior U.S. senator Cory Gardner kept true to his word by blocking former National Security Adviser John Bolton from testifying, sealing the first ever Senate impeachment trial without any witnesses being called.

Gardner’s Impeachment Vote: No ‘Conclusive Reason To Remove’ Trump
From Colorado Public Radio
From the article:
For months Colorado’s junior Republican senator had been relatively quiet on impeachment. He joined most of his Republican colleagues and signed onto a resolution to condemn the House impeachment process, though it never came to a floor vote. Beyond that, he hadn’t come out strongly on whether or not Trump did anything wrong, citing his role as an impartial juror in the trial.
Then came his statement that no further witnesses were needed in the impeachment trial.
In his floor remarks Wednesday, he said that the House’s case “cannot be ‘overwhelming’ and ‘airtight’ and yet incomplete,” in reference to the calls for more investigation and testimony.
CPR News asked Gardner to weigh in on the underlying question in this impeachment case — whether it was appropriate for the president to pressure a U.S ally to take actions that would benefit him politically.

Predictably, Gardner ultimately voted to acquit Trump, ignoring his flagrant abuse of power. The Denver Post's editorial board had something to say:
"U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner either thinks it’s OK for a president to pressure a foreign government to investigate a U.S. citizen for personal and political gain or he’s too afraid to criticize this president for doing just that.
"We’re not sure which is worse.
"Gardner failed to address the issue on the floor of Congress while he was explaining to the public his decision to acquit the president on that very question. In subsequent media interviews where he was asked the question directly, he did the trademark Gardner dodge and weave."

As it seems in Trumpland, loyalty rewards, and Gardner himself received a loyalty reward with a Thursday night announcement that Trump is coming to Colorado.
President Donald Trump will campaign alongside Sen. Cory Gardner in Colorado Springs later this month.
The rally is scheduled for the evening of Feb. 20 at the Broadmoor World Arena.
...
David Pourshoushtari, a spokesperson for the Colorado Democratic Party, issued the following statement about the event:
“Cory Gardner’s a spineless yes-man who’s sold out Colorado to Donald Trump time and time again. Whether it’s their numerous attacks on Coloradans’ healthcare or raiding millions of dollars from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, it’s no wonder they’re both so profoundly unpopular here in Colorado. We rejected Trump in 2016, and we’ll reject him and his enabler Cory Gardner at the ballot box this November.”
