Happy May!
May is dedicated to recognizing and appreciating several different and important issues. May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, Mental Health Awareness Month and Jewish American Heritage Month; we also see Deaf Awareness Week, Teacher Appreciation Week, National Nurses Week, and today is Harvey Milk Day! We have a lot to celebrate and uplift this month and every month. At POV, inclusion and acceptance are part of our core values. And while we can't call out every one every time, the work we do constantly embraces and embodies these values.
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we asked our Director of Counseling Services and Trauma Recovery, Wendy Blanco, for some self-care tips: May is specifically dedicated to raise awareness about the stigmas that still exist around mental health. It is an opportunity to designate time to be intentional about checking in with your own mental wellness and that of those around you. Most importantly, it is a good reason to practice more self-care.
Self-care is time that is meant to restore but also a chance to prioritize awareness of the body and mind connection. Mindful moments are important and necessary for a healthy balance. The Community Resiliency Model created by Ellaine Miller-Karas teaches us tips to recharge in ways that the body is already designed to activate and protect us! Read through these tips and think about ways that you can incorporate into your daily lives. Also notice ways that you already practice some of these strategies:
- Drink a glass of water or a cup of tea
- Look around the room or wherever you are, paying attention to anything that catches your attention
- Name six colors you see in the room (or outside)
- Close and open your eyes and look around the room/landscape
- Count backwards from 10 as you walk around
- If you are inside, notice the furniture, touch the surfaces, noticing the textures
- Notice the temperature in the room
- Notice the sounds where you are
- Walk and pay attention to the movement in your arms and legs and how your feet are making contact with the ground
- Push your hands against a wall or door slowly and notice your muscles pushing or stand against a wall and push your body against the wall facing forward

Denim Day 2022: One to Remember!
Thank you so much to our speakers, performers, participants, sponsors and supporters who made this Denim Day a powerful experience to spread awareness around sexual violence prevention education and commit to being allies and upstanders in this work! With your participation and support, we were able to reach millions of individuals all over the world, increasing our reach and impact. In our 24th year, the campaign continues to spread messages of violence prevention and activism, and to educate on issues surrounding all forms of sexual violence. We could not have done it without your support!
This year, we shared messages around our themes: Let’s protect each other. Be an ally. Be an upstander. We urged supporters to uphold these themes by cultivating and practicing qualities and characteristics to allow people to stand up for themselves, set boundaries and find a safe way to intervene or interrupt a situation, and to listen, speak up and support the dismantling of rape culture. We are so inspired by all of the testimonies, stories, photos and reports of Denim Days all over the world. Denim Day is a movement that continues to grow and gain momentum.
Together we are working toward a world without violence.

POV in the Community: Deaf Nation!
Deaf Nation is the foremost touring trade show for and by deaf people. Since 2003, the deaf nation expo showcase has attracted over a million attendees all over the US. Deaf Nation celebrated 20 years and the Peace Over Violence deaf services team was there to see it!
Our staff of 5 engaged with old friends and new friends and met hundreds of community members. Our deaf services program is designed to meet the needs of the deaf and hard of hearing community with providers that are a part of the community and understand deaf culture.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES! POV enlists the help of volunteers who answer our 24-hour hotline, provide support to victims/survivors, and educate youth and adult community members. Come to one of the sessions to learn about current opportunities with our programs: Counselor Advocate & Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART) Volunteer and Violence Prevention Specialist trainings.

The Youth Over Violence Leadership Institute is for youth who are committed to building and making powerful social change through awareness, advocacy and violence prevention strategies.
The program empowers youth between the ages of 14-19 by educating them on healthy relationships, promoting awareness of teen dating violence, and enhancing community organizing skills. After the summer, students will go back to school as leaders of campus-based violence prevention clubs, and become mentors to other students, identifying and cultivating the next generation of leaders. The Institute utilizes a combination of educational sessions, trauma-informed activities, field trips, and internship projects.

The Stress Spectrum is described as positive, tolerable, and toxic. It refers to the stress response system's effects on the body, not the actual stressful experiences or events. Understanding the science behind reactions and learning skills like reading the nervous system, also called "tracking" in biological-based models like the Community Resiliency Model and the Trauma Resiliency Model, can help a person learn to become aware of the physical reactions of the stress response. This sensory awareness, also called interoception, can be a portal to self-healing as a person learns to distinguish between sensations of distress and well-being.
