Breakthrough Colorado River Deal

Arizona, California, and Nevada agreed Monday to take less water from the drought-strained Colorado River, a breakthrough agreement that, for now, keeps the river from falling so low that it would jeopardize water supply for major Western cities like Phoenix and Los Angeles as well as for some of America’s most productive farmland, as the NYT reports

Into Russia

Russia said that its military and security forces were fighting against Ukrainian units that had crossed into its southern Belgorod region, the largest such incursion into Russian territory since the war began, as the WSJ reports

Kyiv focuses attacks on Bakhmut’s outskirts

Ukrainian forces are staging counterattacks on Russian troops on the outskirts of Bakhmut, even as their presence on the ground dwindles to just small footholds of the eastern city, according to Kyiv, which denied Moscow’s claim over the weekend to have captured the city, as The Washington Post reports

It’s almost summer and that means the Grateful Dead are poised to release another collection of their greatest archival music. In late July, we’re expecting a blockbuster show recorded on June 10, 1973, at the old RFK Stadium in Washington. For me, all shows recorded at RFK are special. DC is my hometown, and I was privileged to see some of the Dead’s RFK shows in the late 80s-early 90s.

But the RFK show that’s being released this July is in fact one of the Dead’s seminal performances. It contains one of the band’s stunning versions of “Dark Star.” Plus, the encore set of the show features members of The Allman Brothers Band with whom the Dead shared the RFK bill.

The Dead have released their first tease from the show in the form of “Ramble On Rose,” a song that the band had first started performing live a few months prior during their famous “Europe ‘72” tour. I wondered why the first song released from the new collection was “Ramble On Rose” and not one of the scorchers with the Allmans or the sublime “Dark Star.” Then, I heard Jerry Garcia’s passionate vocals on this one and I instantly knew why
