Hi John.
I know many folks throughout our community are concerned about public safety. Kansas families should be able to walk home safely at night, or feel confident their child’s school is secure. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their communities.
That’s why my focus is on solutions, not partisan politics. My mom is an Army veteran. She worked closely with law enforcement officials and served in law enforcement herself. I understand our police officers have very difficult jobs.
That’s why I recently commemorated National Police Week by announcing new steps to protect our families. So today, I’m pleased to share an update on how I’m working to fund our local police, take commonsense steps to prevent gun violence, and help individual officers.

My team and I are doing whatever we can to connect police departments in the Kansas Third District with the funding and resources they need. That includes individually reaching out to local departments and police chiefs to connect them with federal grants and other opportunities.
Kansas police officers put their lives on the line to protect our communities every day. Unfortunately, they often work with limited budgets. They also sometimes lack the equipment and training they need to do their jobs.
Good ideas can come from Republicans and Democrats. So I'm pleased to share some new bipartisan and concrete steps to help make progress. That includes:
• The bipartisan Debbie Smith Act. This bill helps local and state crime labs pay for DNA testing. Oftentimes, this forensic evidence is crucial for resolving sexual assault cases. This is a common sense step to ensure justice for survivors and to hold perpetrators accountable.
• The bipartisan EAGLE Act. This bill provides more funding to small and mid-sized police departments. They can use the funds to update their training, ensure accountability, and improve effectiveness.
Police officers have tough jobs and need our support. That’s why I was pleased to announce federal grants from the Department of Justice to help fund our local police departments, including our police department in Overland Park.
• Bipartisan legislation to prevent mass shootings. This bill gives more tools to the Department of Homeland Security to better identify and stop mass shooters. I'm also supporting legislation to strengthen background checks to own firearms, as well as other steps.
• Caring for our police. Law enforcement is a difficult line of work and can involve traumatic situations. That's why I'm supporting the bipartisan Fighting Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Act to ensure public safety officers can better access treatment or preventive care for PTSD.
I've been glad to work with Kansas law enforcement throughout my time in office. For example, I helped secure funding for the Olathe Police Department's Mobile Command Unit.
Olathe’s Mobile Command Unit will help first responders improve their response times and effectiveness while working on the go. I was glad to help secure federal funding for this project.
I'm also working with local law enforcement and public health professionals to address the fentanyl crisis. Fentanyl is the number one cause of overdose deaths in the U.S. That's why I'm fighting this epidemic head on.
It's an honor and a privilege to serve you in the U.S. House of Representatives. If you have any questions or concerns, please never hesitate to contact me.
My warmest regards,
Sharice L. Davids Member of Congress
