Welcome to my latest newsletter:
Welcome to my latest newsletter, my first since the General Election in December
and as the new Secretary of State for Wales.
I therefore start with grateful thanks to the record number of people who supported
me in securing my fourth term with the largest majority so far. For those who chose
other candidates, or who may not have voted at all, please do not feel that you
are in some way restricted in contacting the office should you ever need to.
And so we have left the European Union, or at least started the process by which
we will properly depart in December. It has been a bumpy couple of years in politics
but the certainty of the General Election has resulted in a new atmosphere at Westminster.
It feels like a totally new administration, all pulling together, with a determination
to get things done and to recognise that whilst it was essential to honour the referendum
outcome, it also remains vital to do so with all our interests in mind.

Here in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire I have:
Lobbied against the proposed closure of Whitland recycling centre(pic left). I have
met local County Councillor Sue Allen to discuss the proposal and also contacted
Carmarthenshire County Council Chief Executive Wendy Walters. Many residents have
got in touch with me to say what a disaster they think closure would be as it would
result in more fly tipping and long journeys to Carmarthen to recycle.
Held a meeting to discuss the future provision of superfast broadband with local
Councillors and Cabinet members. Pembrokeshire County Council are leading the way
in Wales with innovative ways of getting full fibre broadband to the most out of
the way places, and 'connectivity' is a major plank of the UK Government's new
agenda too.
Been disappointed by the news that Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has decided to
grant an operating licence to Milford Haven Port
Authority's plan to store baled waste in Pembroke Dock's Royal Dockyard(pic right).
Thousands of local residents expressed their opposition to the plan and yet still
NRW pressed ahead. However we have at least achieved some "conditions" to the permit
which we must insist are enforced by NRW to the letter. Lorries will bring in the
80,000 tonnes of waste each year to a site in a town centre which is close to a
hospital and housing - this can't be acceptable.
Supported Carmarthen businesses who are aiming to become a Business Improvement
District. Further details on what this would mean for the town can be found by clicking
here [[link removed]].
Enjoyed the opening of a second new playpark on the Skrinkle estate in Manorbier
I helped an active group of local residents to get the funding needed for a revamp
the old site. Not only did they achieve their targets but exceeded them comfortably.

In Westminster I have:
Taken my first session of Welsh Questionsat the Despatch Box in the Chamber of the
House of Commons as Secretary of State for Wales - yes, it was as nerve-wracking
as it sounds, especially as our slot is the last one before Prime Minister's Questions.
A short video clip from it can be seen by clicking here [[link removed]]
Met First Minister Mark Drakeford as well as other members of the Welsh Assembly
Government and Assembly Members, I look forward to working closely with them. I
am also meeting businesses, charities, armed forces,
and public sector employers across Wales as I learn what our post-Brexit potential
really is.
Accepted the keys to a new UK Government hub building in Cardiff city centre. William
Morgan House in Central Square will house 4,000 civil servants from several UK Government
departments and agencies.x
Made the keynote speech at the British Holiday Home Park Association's conference
in London. this was as an invitation from local businessman Huw Pendleton from
Narberth, and it was great to meet up with Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire park
owners with whom I've worked closely over the years.
Signed the Holocaust Educational Trust's book of commitment(pic right) to honour
those who were murdered during the Holocaust and also those who work tirelessly
to ensure it's never forgotten.
