Dear John,
Learning for Justice is proud to once again co-sponsor the Teach Truth Day of Action coordinated by Zinn Education Project, Black Lives Matter at School and the African American Policy Forum. This year’s day of action is set for June 10. We encourage educators, students, parents, caregivers and community members to rally across the country and pledge to teach truth and defend LGBTQ+ rights.
Since January 2021, at least 44 states have introduced legislation or taken other action to restrict teaching about race, racism, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation and other topics. Books by Black, Indigenous, authors of color and LGBTQ+ writers are increasingly being banned. In response, educators have gathered across the country to speak out against classroom censorship bills and to make public their pledge to teach the truth on the annual Teach Truth Day of Action.
Here’s how to get started on planning action in your community:
- Check out this step-by-step guide for ideas about events and recommendations for organizing your event.
- Sign up to participate and get your event on the day of action map.
- Use the planning and promotional resources you’ll receive when you sign up, including graphics, handouts and signs, to help organize your event and invite your community.
The Teach Truth Day of Action is an urgent call to support the honest, accurate and inclusive education students deserve. We encourage you to use this day of action to mobilize your communities and support educators and students.
