Dear
Reader,
Let it never be said that F IRST T HINGS wants for ambition.
Since our first Intellectual Retreat on “The Paradox of Freedom” in 2015, we have tackled such topics as “Love and Friendship,” “The Political Life,” and “Death and Mourning.”
Even by these standards, “Creation and Fall” feels ambitious. Of course, the purpose of our two days together is not to exhaust the topic but rather to lay the foundation for a lifetime of further inquiry.
Today, I invite you to take up this challenge with us. Spend two days with the best company and some of the best books at our 2023 F IRST T HINGS Intellectual Retreat in New York City on August 11 and 12. To register, please click on the secure link below.

Guided by tutors from Magdalen College for the Liberal Arts, participants will read and discuss Genesis 1-3, selections from Plato’s Symposium, Book IX of Milton’s Paradise Lost, and much more. Just as important, we will come together in fellowship over cocktails, dinner, and a musical performance by the acclaimed bluegrass band The Hillbilly Thomists.
To join me in New York City on August 11 –12, please register here or using the registration button below. Discounted tuition is available for Readers of F IRST T HINGS (ROFTers) group leaders, as well as classical school teachers, graduate students, and clergy.
