Governor Whitmer Header
Dear Friend,
Michigan has a long history of supporting the U.S. military, dating back to the early days of our nation. We honor the brave Michiganders who serve in our armed forces, whether at our world-class military bases and installations or across the world. These dedicated and courageous individuals protect the freedoms we hold dear. This month, and every month, we thank them for their service.
Sincerely,
Governor Whitmer

Military Appreciation Month
Our service members deserve our thanks and support. That’s why I proclaimed May 2023 as Military Appreciation Month [ [link removed] ] in Michigan. Throughout our nation’s history, our state has been instrumental in protecting the freedoms we enjoy, from offering critical support to the Union in the Civil War, to building the Arsenal of Democracy in WWII. Earlier this month, I signed legislation [ [link removed] ] to improve voting access for service members overseas, to better ensure they have the chance to participate in the republic that they are fighting for. Today, we continue to offer our thanks to our current and past service members and everyone dedicated to keeping our country safe.

Investing in our Defense
Michigan is known for our auto industry, but we are also home to advanced manufacturing up and down the supply chain – that includes the defense industry. From cutting-edge chips and clean energy to aerospace, our manufacturing is interconnected with our defense.
That’s why we’re building the Arsenal of Innovation here in Michigan. In last year’s budget, Michigan secured funds to modernize Selfridge Air National Guard Base [ [link removed] ]. This year, I proposed more funding [ [link removed] ] to compete for next generation aircraft and future fighter missions. Together, we are growing Michigan’s economy while boosting our defense industry.

Lowering Tuition Costs
Behind every member of our National Guard is their family—an invaluable support system that makes countless sacrifices. That's why over the weekend, I signed bipartisan legislation expanding the Michigan National Guard State Tuition Assistance Program [ [link removed] ] to include spouses and children of Michigan National Guard Members.
MINGSTAP
This is the right thing to do. This bipartisan law will open doors for so many more people to get on paths to higher education and good-paying, in-demand jobs without going into debt. I am proud that we can work across the aisle to support our service members and their families, who put their lives on the line to keep us safe and stand tall for our values and freedoms. As Michiganders, we will always have their backs.
By expanding tuition assistance, alongside actions like increasing funding, building veterans' homes across the state, and creating the Helmets to Hardhats [ [link removed] ] program, I am committed to supporting and uplifting our invaluable Michigan National Guard Troops.

Michigan Veterans’ Memorial Park Commission
The Michigan Veterans' Memorial Park & Vietnam Monument is a public memorial honoring those who have served in the United States Military. The Michigan Veterans' Memorial Park Commission [ [link removed] ] is responsible for managing and maintaining the procedures for the use of the Memorial Park and Monument. Located in the Memorial Park, the Monument provides a place for future generations to reflect upon America's longest and most controversial war, one that divided the nation, and was fought by soldiers whose average age was 19 years. I encourage you to visit the Monument and the Memorial Park, which are in downtown Lansing near the Hall of Justice building.
