Last month, our grassroots movement helped deliver a resounding win for democracy in Wisconsin’s state supreme court race. Voters elected Judge Janet Protasiewicz by a double-digit margin, making it clear that they’ve had enough of conservatives’ anti-democratic power grabs.

But Wisconsin was just the beginning. Here are three things you need to know about upcoming state supreme court races:

(1) In the coming months, more than 30 states will hold elections for their highest courts.

These elections could have major impacts on the future of voting rights, fair maps, abortion rights, gun safety, and more – not just in their respective states, but all across the country.

(2) Republican strategists have called state supreme court races “the next big political frontier.”

For years, Republicans worked to stack federal courts with justices who they believed would help advance their unpopular conservative agenda. Those efforts are paying off. Now, far-right donors are plotting to repeat that strategy across the country by working to elect their preferred justices to state supreme courts.

(3) Attorney General Eric Holder said, “American life as we know it is at stake in every state judicial election.”

That’s because, in light of recent SCOTUS decisions eliminating national protections for reproductive and voting rights, state courts are more important than ever to protect our fundamental freedoms. To preserve the future of our democracy, it’s vital that we elect fair-minded justices to our state supreme courts.
