Just yesterday, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced its final management plans for Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments -- and they're everything we feared.

After the Trump administration illegally slashed these monuments by as much as 85 percent, the unprotected lands of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalate are at extreme risk of oil and gas drilling, mining, road building, and other devastating development. Making matters worse, the lands left inside the gutted monuments won't even be adequately protected by the BLM's new management plans.

Since 2017, NPCA and a coalition of national and local groups -- including five sovereign tribal nations that have inhabited and cared for these lands for centuries -- have been fighting in federal court to restore the full, original protections for these monuments. But now the Trump administration is rushing ahead with its plans before our lawsuits are settled.

If they succeed, ancestral tribal lands, one of the world's most renowned paleontological sites, priceless cultural treasures, pristine wildernesses, and vital habitat for wildlife like eagles, elk, and owls could be polluted, fracked, clear-cut, and paved over.
