Here’s what this week in #nvleg will look like (so far)...

Hi Friend,

This week begins what many of us lovingly call the endgame portion of the Legislative Session – when the five big budget bills legislators are constitutionally mandated to work on and (generally) a time when anything can happen. From now on, most things will be happening during floor sessions and money committees and schedules for everything will be ever-changing.

We also have a deadline this Friday for bills to make it through their second house passage. There’s going to be a lot to do in the next few weeks, so read ahead to see how you can help!

As you may already know, Governor Lombardo decided to side with the extremists of his party base instead of the public safety of Nevadans by vetoing a gun violence prevention bill like SB171. This bill would prevent Nevadans convicted of a hate crime from purchasing a firearm for up to ten years.

Click here to call your Nevada State Senator and tell them to overturn Gov. Lombardo's veto on SB171!

CALL OF THE CHAIR - SENATE FINANCE

  • Call of the Chair means this meeting will happen whenever the chair of the committee calls it to order. It can be any time of the day.
  • During this meeting - the five big budget bill draft requests we mentioned earlier, will be introduced. Here’s what those are:
    • BDR S-1207 Authorizes expenditures by agencies of the State Government for the 2023-2025 biennium.
    • BDR S-1208 Ensures sufficient funding for K-12 public education for the 2023-2025 biennium.
    • BDR S-1210 Makes various changes regarding state financial administration and makes appropriations for the support of the civil government of the State for the 2023-2025 biennium.
    • BDR S-1211 Authorizes and provides funding for certain projects of capital improvement.
    • BDR S-1212 Provides for compensation of state employees for the 2023-2025 biennium.

     How you can help:

  • Budget bills are different than other bills but crucial since this is our tax dollars being put to work. These are the bills that will fund education and our entire government.
  • THIS is the budget you have been hearing Gov. Lombardo is threatening to veto. So it is CRUCIAL to monitor the conversations regarding these budgets from the BEGINNING. If this budget is vetoed, the government could shut down.
  • So, the way you can help is to stay informed on these budget bills and stay tuned on updates from us on how to advocate for passing a budget and holding Gov. Lombardo accountable.
