This week, I voted to convict President Trump on both impeachment charges brought against him by Congress. Before I go any further, I want you to know that this wasn't an easy decision, and I didn't make it based on my party affiliation.

My friend and colleague Senator Doug Jones of Alabama voted alongside me because it was the right thing to do, even though he knew it could cost him his re-election campaign in November.

Doug displayed the same courage and integrity in the Senate that he showed when he prosecuted the Ku Klux Klan members behind the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham. Like me, Doug took an oath of office to put our country first and deliver impartial justice. But because of this vote, Doug's opponents, including Jeff Sessions and Roy Moore, are already attacking him.

The far-right will stop at nothing to defeat Doug and reclaim his Senate seat. But Doug's no stranger to tough fights, and he'll take on anyone — Sessions and Moore included — to defend our democracy.
