MICHIGAN COALITION FOR RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS "Promoting safe use and ownership of firearms through education, litigation, and legislation." MONDAY E'NEWS Detroit Moves to Create Gun Free Zones On Tuesday of last week, the Detroit City Council approved two resolutions to establish new gun free zones in the city. The first resolution calls on the Michigan Legislature to pass Senate Bill 208 which would eliminate preemption of local firearms regulations on property owned or leased by local units of government. Without the passage of the legislation, the City of Detroit does not have the legal ability to establish new gun free zones. The second resolution declare the council's intent to establish gun free zones at the Detroit Riverfront, Greektown, Hart Plaza, Spirit Plaza, and Campus Martius. The city would also require all public and private events of 500 people or more that receive a permit from the city to be established as gun-free zones. Several members of the Detroit City Council have expressed concerns about the proposed gun free zones. Council President Pro-Tem James Tate questioned the lack of an enforcement strategy. Councilman Fred Durhal III, who co-chairs the city's gun violence task force, said several of its members are uncomfortable with naming downtown as a primary focus stating the most shootings in Detroit happen in the neighborhoods rather than downtown. Legislative changes to preemption do not appear to have majority support at this point in time due to opposition from local officials outside of Detroit who prefer that the state, rather than local governments, tackle these very controversial and divisive issues. The above rally is posted for informational purposes only. This is not an event endorsed by MCRGO's Board.
