John,
I wanted to make sure you saw Deborah’s email from yesterday. We have a few days before the federal government defaults on its debts for the first time in history.
This doesn’t have to happen. Congress can vote on a clean debt ceiling increase—raise the debt ceiling without instituting cruel cuts to essential human needs programs—and stave off an economic calamity.
The results of a default would impact every corner of society. Millions of jobs will be lost. Social Security checks won’t go out on time. Medicare and Medicaid payments to health care providers will be delayed, and much much more.
Default is unthinkable. But our allies must stand firm against agreeing to cuts that harm people with low incomes, people with disabilities, children, and the aging. Cuts to Medicaid, SNAP and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families should also be unthinkable—and so should huge cuts and caps on everything from child care to education to environmental clean-ups.
We need Congress to show up and raise the debt ceiling limit without massive cuts to human needs programs—and do it now to avoid an economic collapse.
Chip in $5 today to keep up the pressure on Congress. We have just days until a federal default.

-- DEBORAH'S EMAIL --
John,
If Congress does not agree to raise the debt ceiling by the beginning of June—just days away—the federal government will not be able to pay its bills and will go into default. The consequences of this would be catastrophic. SNAP food payments would be delayed, as would Medicaid and Medicare payments to hospitals and doctors―devastating to health infrastructure, especially in rural communities.
Social Security payments would be delayed for 66 million people.
Two million federal workers, 1.4 million active-duty military personnel, plus government contractors would all see delays in payments. And veterans’ benefits, including disability payments and pensions would be impacted.
Plus, interest rates on loans, credit cards, and mortgages would rise and the stock market would crater, dropping anywhere from 33 – 45%, wiping out $12 trillion of household wealth, including retirement accounts.
Right-wing extremists in Congress are willing to send the U.S. into an economic free fall so they can impose massive cuts to essential human needs programs.
We’re fighting back.
Already, we’ve sent more than 180,000 letters to members of Congress to reject Kevin McCarthy’s cruel cuts and to raise the debt limit without preconditions. With a potential default just days away, rush a donation right now to keep the pressure on Congress to act!
