Hello,
What do you think of when you hear the term "liberal"?Chances are, if someone had been posed that same question 200 years ago they would have come up with a very different answer! You see, while the political ideology so pervasive today has hijacked the term to mean support for more centralized government at the expense of individual freedom, that hasn't always been the case.

During the 17th, 18th, and much of the 19th century, liberalism was an unshakable belief that the state exists to protect individuals from coercion by other individuals or groups and to widen the range within which individuals can exercise their freedom. There has never been a more urgent time to understand this important distinction. That's why the Hoover Institution has pulled from the vast archives of famed free-market economist Milton Friedman to offer you the free commentary, "Liberalism, Old Style."While Dr. Friedman originally wrote this in-depth piece back in 1955, I know you will find it every bit as relevant in today's political climate as it was back then.
