I know all too well from my constituents that student loan debt is a large burden for many families, folks.

I was knocking doors in Hazel Park last June when I met with a union family who did not qualify for financial aid to send their daughter to college.

When I tried to understand a little further, I was shocked to learn that their father almost had $100,000 in student loan debt himself. He looked me right in the eyes and said “Haley how could this be?” How can I still have student loan debt and be a union auto worker and be told my family doesn’t qualify for financial aid? I don’t want my daughter to go through what I went through.

That’s why I was proud to introduce the Alleviating Intergenerational Debt (or AID) Act – legislation that allows parents to include their own student debt numbers when determining financial aid for their children.

This bill would provide relief by allowing 15% or $4,000 of the parent’s outstanding loan balance to be subtracted from their income and taken into consideration for the Student Aid Index.

With higher education costs on the rise, addressing the student debt crisis is a necessity, and this bill is a step in the right direction.

As MI-11’s Congresswoman, I will continue to do whatever I can to uplift working class Americans. But to keep doing my job, I need your grassroots support to stay in Congress. Will you chip in $25 or whatever you can today ?
