NEW MATCH: Gifts DOUBLED until May 31st >> Bombshell reporting from ProPublica and The Washington Post reveals that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has knowingly and willfully violated ethics rules for nearly two decades. First came the revelations that Republican mega-donor Harlan Crow had given Thomas luxury vacations, trips on private jets, an island-hopping cruise, travel to exclusive resorts — even paying the private school tuition for a relative Thomas said he was raising “as a son.” Then, just two weeks ago, it came out that Federalist Society leader Leonard Leo arranged for Thomas's wife Ginni to be paid tens of thousands of dollars under the table by a conservative nonprofit. That same year, the group filed a brief in Shelby County v. Holder, the landmark case that gutted the Voting Rights Act. Thomas didn’t disclose the conflict of interest, nor did he recuse himself from the case. It’s not “hospitality” as the Thomases would like us to believe. It’s corruption, pure and simple. We won’t sit by as extreme and unethical judges like Clarence Thomas line their pockets while they threaten Americans’ safety and their freedoms — and as a defender of justice, we know you won't either. With more than 14,000 People For members like you signing our petition to the DOJ calling for an investigation into Justice Thomas’s misconduct, we’re urging supporters to take the next step in our fight for fair courts and accountability.
By not reporting gifts he received, Thomas is flouting judicial ethics that federal judges at every other level must adhere to. All lower court federal judges would have to disclose these kinds of gifts and recuse themselves from cases where the gift-giver was in front of their bench. But no such ethical standards exist for the Supreme Court. Instead, it’s left up to each individual justice to make the decision about recusing themselves from cases where they have a conflict of interest. Thomas has shown that he cannot be trusted to put his oath above his own self-interest. That’s why People For the American Way is demanding accountability, while also urging Congress to pass a robust code of ethics for the Supreme Court to prevent this kind of brazen corruption from happening in the future. Through our grassroots mobilization, education, and activism campaigns we’re fighting for fair courts, helping confirm fair-minded federal judges, and blocking unsuitable nominees from taking the bench. Thanks for all that you do — we can’t do this work without you. Zach VanHouten
