John,
If Congress does not agree to raise the debt ceiling by the beginning of June—just days away—the federal government will not be able to pay its bills and will go into default. The consequences of this would be catastrophic. SNAP food payments would be delayed, as would Medicaid and Medicare payments to hospitals and doctors―devastating to health infrastructure, especially in rural communities.
Social Security payments would be delayed for 66 million people.
Two million federal workers, 1.4 million active-duty military personnel, plus government contractors would all see delays in payments. And veterans’ benefits, including disability payments and pensions would be impacted.
Plus, interest rates on loans, credit cards, and mortgages would rise and the stock market would crater, dropping anywhere from 33 – 45%, wiping out $12 trillion of household wealth, including retirement accounts.
Right-wing extremists in Congress are willing to send the U.S. into an economic free fall so they can impose massive cuts to essential human needs programs.
We’re fighting back.
Already, we’ve sent more than 180,000 letters to members of Congress to reject Kevin McCarthy’s cruel cuts and to raise the debt limit without preconditions. With a potential default just days away, rush a donation right now to keep the pressure on Congress to act!
RUSH A DONATION
Thank you for all you do to fight for vulnerable communities and stand up to this right-wing hostage taking,
Deborah Weinstein Executive Director, Coalition on Human Needs
