Weekend Reading
Dear Friend,
The U.S. is less than two weeks away from a deadline to raise the debt ceiling or risk default. As negotiations intensify, Congress cannot concede on what matters most—the health and well-being of all people. That means NO cuts to health care, nutrition assistance, education, and other vital programs. Send a message to your members of Congress today! [link removed]
Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:
AFSC and community groups protest proposed child detention facility in North Carolina: [link removed] Last weekend, dozens of people marched to stop the federal government from opening a detention center for migrant children in Greensboro. The facility would be run by a for-profit corporation and could hold up to 800 children. “We don’t want children to be detained,” said AFSC’s Cecile Crawford. “We want them to be protected, and we want them unified with their families on this side of the border.” (Fox 8)
Supporting refugees in Somalia and Kenya: [link removed] Violent conflict and severe drought have forced many Somalis to leave their homes and communities. With support from AFSC, thousands of people are working to rebuild a more peaceful, sustainable future, writes AFSC’s Zaina Kisongoa.
Aid for elders in Gaza after recent airstrikes: [link removed] We’re grateful to everyone who has donated to provide elders in Gaza with wheelchairs, walkers, medical mattresses, and other essentials. After Israel’s airstrikes on Gaza last week, we are expanding our humanitarian response. If you haven’t already, please make a gift to help more seniors meet essential needs.
Visiting the migrant camp at the San Diego-Tijuana border: [link removed] Two weeks ago, as the end of Title 42 approached, a migrant camp sprung up between two border walls near San Diego, California. A New York Times reporter described what she saw. There were hundreds of migrants from more than a dozen countries, hoping to be allowed into the United States. Aid workers, including staff from AFSC, were distributing food, water, and other essentials through the wall. “People are cold, hungry, desperate, destitute, nervous,” said AFSC’s Adriana Jasso. “It’s a dire situation, to say the least.” Read more about how AFSC is supporting asylum seekers at the camp. Register for our next No Way to Treat a Child campaign webinar (May 23, 12 p.m. ET / 9 a.m. PT ) : [link removed] A new bill (H.R. 3103) in Congress would hold Israel accountable for violating Palestinian rights. It would bar Israel from using U.S. aid to detain Palestinian children, demolish Palestinian homes, and annex Palestinian land. Sign up for our webinar to learn more about the bill—and how you can lobby your representative to support it.
Be well and take care
