Greetings,
?
Conference committee reports that will set our state?s budget are now being approved in both the House and Senate. As I write this, we await the final reports on taxes, transportation, and health. I?ll provide a more complete report early next week.
?
*SOCIAL SECURITY TAX RELIEF EXTENDED*
Some senior citizens, but unfortunately not all, will see the tax on their Social Security income eliminated according to details from the taxes conference committee report. The change would impact couples earning up to $100,000 in annual income. You?ll recall Social Security tax relief was basically left for dead by the House majority until GOP pressure revived discussions.
?
*GAS TAX AND DELIVERY TAX?*
You?ll also recall the House majority originally approved numerous tax increases in the transportation arena - license tab renewals, the motor vehicle sales tax and a 75-cent delivery tax on goods or prepared food delivered to your door, to name a few. Now they are hinting at a tax increase on gasoline that would be tied to inflation, which if implemented means the gas tax could increase every year without legislative approval.
?
*PROPOSED REBATE CHECKS DWINDLING*
Governor Walz began session by stating that he wanted $2,000 rebates sent to married couples making $150,000 or less and $1,000 checks sent to single filers making $75,000 or less each year. As it stands today, legislative Democrats are only offering $520 for the same joint filers and $260 for singles, despite a $17.5 billion surplus.
?
*NATIONAL POLICE WEEK OBSERVED*
In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. On Monday, May 15, a ceremony was held on the grounds of our State Capitol to honor those peace officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. It?s a moving experience, and I?m always proud to support the men and women who wear the blue.
