"We're all standing together and fighting. And what we have to do now is defend ourselves from these right wing politicians" - Gov. Roy Cooper

Hi team – it’s North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper with an important update on our fight to protect women’s reproductive freedom. In a moment, I’m going to explain why donating to help elect Democratic governors is so critical in our fight to protect reproductive freedom, but before I do, can you rush a matched gift of $3 to the DGA right now?

This week, Republicans in the North Carolina General Assembly voted to override my veto and enact their radical abortion ban. Just one vote would have prevented an override. The nation’s eyes were on North Carolina, but not a single Republican stepped up. This bill is awful and jeopardizes the health of millions of North Carolinians, but I’m already fighting back.

We put Republicans who promised to protect abortion rights on the defensive so much that GOP leaders argued that their bill was much less restrictive than we warned. We are doing everything we can so that the implementation takes them at their word and gives as much access as possible. That’s what Democratic Governors can do even in the face of Republican supermajorities.

This isn’t an isolated incident. Since Roe was overturned, Republican-led legislatures have charged ahead with new extreme restrictions. More than a dozen states now ban abortion, and several other Republican majority legislatures are considering new restrictions this session:

-After Kansas voters overwhelmingly rejected a proposed constitutional amendment that would have stripped Kansans of their right to an abortion, Republican lawmakers opened the 2023 legislative session by trying to attack that right anyway.
-Just last month in Florida, far-right radical Ron DeSantis signed one of the nation’s strictest abortion bans into law.
-And in South Carolina, Republican legislators are now on track to pass a similar bill to what extremists here in North Carolina just rammed through the legislature.

I won’t sugarcoat it. This is a difficult moment, team, but we cannot throw in the towel. They’re counting on us to get tired and to stop fighting. But that won’t happen. We WILL stay in this fight – because Americans deserve so much better than the extremist Republican Party dictating our freedoms.

The best way to fight back? Elect Democratic governors who will safeguard our most fundamental rights. But Republicans are already spending millions on attacks. They’re hoping to flip Dem gov-led states like Kentucky and here in North Carolina and replace them with far-right Republicans. We cannot let that happen.

Will you rush a gift of $3 or whatever you can to help DGA reach our emergency $35,000 goal, elect Democratic governors, and STOP Republican attacks on reproductive freedom?

Thanks for standing with me,

Roy Cooper
Governor of North Carolina
