Dear
friend of the Journal,
Don’t you love the first bloom that opens up in the spring? Trees are still bare. It’s too early to break out the warm weather clothes. And yet there's that one little flower presenting itself to the world. I always find joy knowing that change is coming.

But sometimes, change can be scary as well. I’m sure, like me, you sometimes feel like the creeping threat of climate change is too much to bear. The prospect of a bright future feels faint when the news is full of reports about wildfires, tornados, and droughts.

One thing Earth Island Journal readers appreciate is that we make space for stories that inspire and give us cause for hope amid such worries. A recent example is Sage Agee’s personal essay ([link removed]) that appeared in our spring print magazine.

Wildfires and unexpected ice storms have threatened Sage’s home in rural Oregon. As was true for many people, the Covid-19 pandemic and the January 6th insurrection added to Sage’s fears about the climate crisis and their young child's future.

In this essay, Sage shares how Solarpunk, a literary genre that echoes real-world social justice movements, taught them how to channel this existential dread into hope.

We are able to make space for essays like Sage’s because of donations from readers like you. We can also publish essays, commentary, and investigations paywall-free. Anyone can read and share these inspiring stories thanks to our members.

Give today and help us find more stories like Sage’s that inspire and spread hope.
