Governor Walz Signs Historic Gun Safety Measures Into Law

On Friday, Governor Walz signed historic gun safety measures into law, including universal background checks and a red flag law that allows law enforcement to intervene when someone is at high risk of injuring themselves or others with a firearm. Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan were joined by former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, legislators, and gun safety advocates.?

*?As a veteran, gun-owner, hunter, and dad, I know basic gun safety isn?t a threat to the Second Amendment ? it?s about keeping our kids safe,? *said Governor Walz. *?There?s no place for weapons of war in our schools, churches, banks, or anywhere else people are just trying to live their lives. Today is about taking meaningful action to create a safer future for our kids, and I am proud to sign this commonsense, life-saving legislation into law.?*

Governor Walz Signs Bill Providing $240 Million to Replace Lead Pipes Across the State

Governor Walz signed a bill into law that will improve Minnesotans? health and safety by providing $240 million to remove and replace lead pipes across the state.?

*?Safe, clean drinking water is a foundational human need ? and it is long past time we make it a reality for all Minnesotans,?*?said Governor Walz.?*?By investing in lead pipe replacement across the state, we?re taking the burden off families and homeowners and improving the health and safety of Minnesotans in every corner of the state. This is how we build a safer, cleaner future for our children and grandchildren.?*

*?Every Minnesotan deserves safe, clean drinking water ? full stop,?*?said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan.?*?Right now, over 100,000 pipes are leaching lead into our drinking water, presenting the greatest risk to children and pregnant people and disproportionately harming marginalized communities across the state. This is unacceptable, and we?re taking action. I am so grateful to the legislators and broad coalition of advocates for recognizing that we?"can"?make safe drinking water a reality for?"everyone".?*

Governor Walz Signs Agriculture and Broadband Bill Into Law

Governor Walz visited a farm in Finlayson, Minnesota, to sign the agriculture and broadband bill into law. The bill expands high-speed broadband, protects grain producers, and strengthens the state?s work to help aspiring farmers and producers succeed.?

*?Agriculture is central to our state?s identity, and this bipartisan law will empower Minnesota?s farmers, ranchers, and producers to succeed for years in the future,?*?said Governor Walz.?*?From protecting producers with the state?s first grain indemnity fund to making a $100 million investment in expanding high-speed broadband and supporting Minnesota?s emerging farmers, this budget provides security for our farmers and producers and ensures we can continue growing and innovating in our nation-leading agriculture industry.?*

*?I am so excited for the work we will get done for farmers, producers, and rural communities across the state with this budget. Governor Walz Signs Veterans and Military Affairs Bill Into Law

Governor Walz signed into law a comprehensive veterans and military affairs bill that will move the state closer to its goal of becoming the fourth state to end veteran homelessness, expand service bonuses for veterans, fund veterans homes, and invest in the readiness of the Minnesota National Guard.

*?For the dedication and sacrifice our military members and veterans give to our state and country, they deserve our highest support,?*?said Governor Walz.?*?By expanding service bonuses, investing in veterans homes and the health of our service members, and moving Minnesota closer to ending veterans homelessness, this bill will improve the lives of veterans and service members across the state. With nearly unanimous support from the legislature, this bill shows that Minnesotans deeply care about their veterans, and we will continue to show up for them at the Capitol.?*

Governor Walz Signs $1 Billion Housing Investment Into Law

Governor Walz signed into law $1 billion for housing, the largest single investment in housing in state history. The bill will help construct new housing with a focus on units in Greater Minnesota, reducing homeownership disparities, and expanding access to rental assistance.

*?**As one of the largest costs for families and most foundational human needs, our Administration is making a generational investment in housing,?*?said Governor Walz.?*?**Whether it?s building new housing infrastructure, providing rental assistance, or ensuring homeownership is an option for all Minnesotans, this bill will have a historic impact on the quality of life in Minnesota and move us towards becoming the best state to raise a family.?*

*?Not all Minnesotans have the same options when it comes to housing, and this bill is one big step towards filling in those gaps,?*?said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan.?*?We can provide additional affordable housing options, make homeownership achievable for more Minnesotans, invest in new housing across the state, and so much more. Governor Walz Orders Flags at Half-Staff in Honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day

Governor Walz ordered all United States and Minnesota flags to be flown at half-staff from sunrise until sunset on Monday, May 15, 2023, in honor of peace officers who have been killed or injured in the line of duty. Governor Walz also proclaimed May 15-21, 2023, as Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week in the State of Minnesota.?

*?Today and every day, it is fitting to honor those Peace Officers who gave their lives to protect ours and to thank the over 10,900 Law Enforcement Officers in Minnesota who serve in 417 law enforcement agencies for their dedication and service to Minnesota communities,?*?reads the proclamation issued by Governor Walz.
