This is a historic week for our clean energy future.

I’ve been working to make the SunZia Transmission and Wind Project a reality for most of my congressional career.

The SunZia project will be the largest renewable energy infrastructure project in our country’s history. Yesterday, it finally advanced thanks to a Record of Decision issued by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

The magnitude and importance of this project is staggering. It will bring $20.5 billion in total economic benefits and create 2,000 jobs during construction. It will generate enough wind power for 3 million homes. And it includes major wins for local communities, private landholders, and stakeholders.

I’m incredibly proud of this milestone, especially after so many years of hard work with stakeholders and local communities — and many objections from former Republican New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez.

But the truth is, it shouldn’t have taken so long. The Wall Street Journal even pointed out that Taylor Swift released her first album and George W. Bush was president when work on this project began. In other words, it’s been a minute. And it wasn’t for a lack of trying on advocates’ part.

We need more clean, renewable power on the grid to take on the climate crisis with the urgency it demands. We can do that while also creating good-paying jobs, and save millions for families across the nation. But first we need to bring more major transmission projects online, faster.

That’s why I will soon introduce a bill to reform the long and convoluted permitting process and make way for a wave of clean energy projects. With the threat of climate change growing by the minute, we can’t afford to wait this long to approve clean energy projects.

We couldn't have made it this far without grassroots supporters powering the campaigns of leaders like me and my colleagues in New Mexico who are committed to building a clean energy future.

If you're able, can you chip in any amount to my re-election campaign so I can keep fighting in the Senate to advance clean energy projects that will help take on climate change and grow our economy?

This was a long time coming, but it is only the beginning of what we can do together. Thank you.
