Friend, Our law enforcement officers make many sacrifices to protect our communities and wake up every single day ready to run toward danger to ensure our safety. This week is National Police Week, and I voted for several pieces of legislation to show support for law enforcement and disavow the dangerous defund the police movement. H.Res. 363: recognizes National Police Week and honors law enforcement officers for their acts of sacrifice and heroism. H.R. 2494 (POLICE Act): ensures that illegal immigrants who assault police officers are deported. H.R. 3091 (Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act): allows federal law enforcement officers in good standing to purchase their service weapon when that weapon is being retired. H.Con.Res. 40: expresses congressional support for law enforcement officers and opposes efforts to defund, disband, dismantle, or abolish the police. My team and I also visited local law enforcement officers to thank them for their service and show our appreciation! Iowa law enforcement has our back and I’ll always have theirs. Best, National Police Week In honor of National Police Week, I stopped by the Marion Police Department and the Linn County Sheriff's Office to thank our law enforcement for their tireless work to protect our communities and show my appreciation for their service. EATS Act I was extremely disappointed in the Supreme Court's decision to uphold California's Prop 12 last week. Prop 12 would allow liberal California lawmakers who don't know the first thing about farming to regulate Iowa farmers. It's a bacon ban by another name. Iowa farmers take great care of their animals, the environment, and their communities. I’ve visited Iowa farms and have seen firsthand how animal comfort and well-being is central for farmers and caretakers. I'll soon be re-introducing legislation – the EATS Act – to push back on this bacon ban. The EATS Act prohibits state and local governments from interfering with the production or manufacture of agricultural products in other states and protects free market interstate commerce. Iowans know food doesn’t grow at the grocery store – it comes from hardworking farmers in Iowa who work tirelessly to feed the world and ensure folks across the country can enjoy safe, affordable, and high-quality food for their families. Stay tuned as we push back against the Prop 12 bacon ban! No Surprise Bills for New Moms Act New parents have enough on their plates without having to worry about getting a surprise medical bill or the cost of an unexpected medical visit in the first weeks of their baby’s life. I helped introduce the bipartisan No Surprise Bills for New Moms Act alongside Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA-47) to expand health care access for newborn babies and simplify the enrollment process so new parents can focus on keeping their babies healthy and happy! Read more about our bill here. Improving Cybersecurity This week, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Director Jen Easterly joined me for a conversation on the importance of cybersecurity and our bipartisan efforts to ensure entities of all sizes have the resources to protect themselves from cyberattacks. Watch the full conversation here. Meeting with TSA Administrator David Pekoske At a recent House Appropriations Committee hearing, TSA Administrator David Pekoske agreed to work with me to ease challenges veterans traveling with service animals face at airports. I was glad to continue that important conversation with him this week and look forward to working together to ease this process for our veterans. Community Bankers of Iowa I met with the Community Bankers of Iowa this week! Community bankers are vital to Iowa’s Main Street economies – especially in rural areas – and help ensure families and small businesses are financially secure. Thank you for all you do! Growth Energy It was great meeting with Growth Energy to discuss the Iowa delegation’s recent win for Iowa biofuels in the debt ceiling negotiations and our continued efforts on year-round E15. I am grateful for their advocacy and partnership on behalf of Iowa biofuels. Iowa Firefighters Association I met with the Iowa Firefighters Association to discuss ways we can support firefighters – including our volunteer firefighters – who work tirelessly to keep Iowans safe.
