Update on Debt Limit Negotiations
Friend,
Negotiations on the debt ceiling are ongoing in Washington, but negotiators are currently facing an impasse. I wanted to update you on a few sticking points that we are seeing.
Right now, the President and Speaker McCarthy are working through negotiations based off the Limit, Save, Grow Act, legislation that responsibly lifted the debt ceiling. The House passed this bill. The Senate has not brought this legislation that increases the debt ceiling up for a vote. Included in the bill were provisions to claw back unspent emergency COVID funding, guardrails to limit the growth of future government spending, and work and job search requirements for childless, able bodied adults, requiring individuals who are able to work, look for part time positions or community service opportunities.
Right now, the President and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have expressed concerns for implementing work and job search requirements.
I find these provisions to be common sense reforms that can help us create more fiscal stability in Washington and get more people back in the workforce. We must begin limiting the growth of the federal government, save taxpayers money, and grow the economy. I joined Bloomberg this week to discuss debt limit negotiations.

Honoring National Police Week
This week, we honor our nation's police officers. Their courage and bravery is shown each and every day on the front lines. As we have continued to see crime increase, our brave law enforcement officers continue to step up and show their dedication to serving our communities and keeping us safe.
I supported several bills this week in the House to ensure we support, fund, and thank our nation's law enforcement officers. Each of these pieces of legislation received bipartisan support:
- H. Con Res. 40: Expressing support for local law enforcement officers and condemning efforts to defund or dismantle local law enforcement agencies.
- H.R. 2494, the POLICE Act: Legislation that would amend U.S. immigration law to render assaulting a law enforcement officer as a deportable offense
Men and women in law enforcement need our support. We must support and fund our law enforcement across the country to better help them protect our communities and keep us all safe. I am thankful for the courage and dedication of our nation's law enforcement.
As always, if you need assistance or would like to share an opinion with me, please don't hesitate to reach out to my office.
On Wisconsin,
Bryan Steil Member of Congress
