Legislative Update

Police Week

This week is National Police Week, where we commemorate all of the officers we've lost in the line of duty, and we thank all those who've done the job and those still protecting our communities.

Judiciary and Public Safety Omnibus

We all want our communities to be safe, and all sides deserve to have a seat at the table while discussing legislation that impacts that. Unfortunately, the majority party shut Republican voices out of the discussion. There was not a single Republican on the committee, where they negotiated and adopted many controversial and extreme policies that will not do anything to impact the rise in violent crime.

The Public Safety omnibus included two provisions that infringe on Minnesotans' Second Amendment Rights. The first is?the expanded background checks for gun sales and transfers. Because of the record keeping requirements in the bill, if you sold or transferred a firearm and then misplaced the transfer record within the next ten years, you could be criminally charged.

The other provision the red flag law. This provision could be seriously misused to target legal gun owners, and result in confiscating firearms without the opportunity for the targeted person to defend themselves.

There is also a policy in the bill that allows convicted criminals to get out of prison early if they simply complete a Department of Corrections curriculum - even if they don't prove that they are rehabilitated.

Session isn't over yet, and I will continue to fight for the people of our district against these bad bills.
