History was made in Colorado Springs this week! On Tuesday, Yemi Mobolade, a Nigerian immigrant, won his runoff election [[link removed]] to become Colorado Springs’ first Black mayor! This is not just a personal win for Mobolade, but also one for New American communities in the city, state, and beyond—as well as a reminder that voters are, as Mobolade put it, “hungry for a new type of leadership.” As we come up on Immigrant Heritage Month, let’s carry this spirit into June, celebrating the diverse voices that fuel our movement and our democracy.

Last week, Title 42—a Trump administration policy that weaponized the COVID-19 pandemic to authorize the expulsion of migrants from the United States—officially expired. Despite the anti-immigrant rhetoric perpetuated by some elected officials and media outlets telling people that the country would be dealing with a crisis, in reality, there has actually been an overall decrease [[link removed]] in the number of border crossings since Title 42’s expiration. Instead of fabricating a crisis, we’d like to see our elected officials focus on real solutions that build a fair and humane immigration system.
