National Police Week

I am deeply dedicated to supporting the immeasurable contributions made by law enforcement officers. This week was National Police Week, a time to pay tribute to the brave men and women who risk their lives to ensure the safety of our communities. It is crucial that we honor the memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community. Regrettably, the impact of violent encounters on the well-being and health of our law enforcement personnel often goes unnoticed.

ImageOn Thursday, I joined several of my colleagues and Patrick Yoes, the President of the National Fraternal Order of Police, at a press conference in support of our men and women in blue. Former Sheriff, Congressman John Rutherford (FL-5) introduced H.R. 743, the Protect and Serve Act of 2023, a piece of legislation that will establish a new criminal offense for knowingly assaulting a law enforcement officer and causing serious bodily injury (or attempting to do so) in circumstances that affect interstate commerce. I am a proud cosponsor of the Protect and Serve Act. Our officers deserve Congress’ full support and protection.

However, our reverence for law enforcement officers should extend far beyond a solitary week of recognition. It is a commitment that we must uphold every single day. Providing the necessary resources, equipment, and training to enable them to carry out their duties with efficacy and safety is of utmost importance. Our support for them is vital.

Delivering for America

This week, during a Government Operations and Federal Workforce subcommittee hearing, I brought in Postmaster General DeJoy to delve into the current state of the United States Postal Service. My subcommittee wanted a better comprehension of the progress made in rescuing the Postal Service from financial instability through the Postmaster General’s “Delivering for America Plan”, which aims to modernize its business model.

ImageWhen Mr. DeJoy assumed his position in May 2020, he inherited a Postal Service that was dangerously close to running out of funds and in dire need of modernization. Since then, Mr. DeJoy has proven himself as a proactive leader. Setting himself apart from his predecessors, he developed and effectively implemented the Delivering for America plan. His instrumental role in the development and passage of the Postal Service Reform Act demonstrated his commitment to its future.

We wish for the success of the USPS and will actively monitor their progress. The initial two years under the Delivering for America plan showed promising results, but the first two quarters of this year brought significant losses. It is crucial to understand the reasons behind these setbacks and their implications for the long-term success of the plan. We must recognize that the Postal Service, like any institution, is influenced by economic and market forces. The recent high inflation rates and a potentially cooling market for shipping and mail products have impacted its operations. We need to accurately assess which factors are within the Postal Service's control and which are not. Nonetheless, there are signs of progress, such as the stabilization of service performance.
