Dear Friends,
The 2023 legislative session is in its final hours. We have been spending long hours on the floor this week as Democrats pass their expensive, mandate-heavy bills. Despite our $17.5 billion surplus, these bills are going to raise taxes by $10 billion and provide little permanent, meaningful tax relief.
This week the House passed the Education omnibus bill. This bill puts mandates over students and takes away local control from school districts. Below is a chart that compares the GOP Educational Proposal to the Democrats? Education omnibus bill:
We need to empower parents, teachers, and school boards to work together. But we can only do this if the state provides the funding and flexibility districts need to meet their individual needs. This bill gets in the way of local control, and for that reason I voted no.
I have been sharing my perspective as an educator on the House floor this week. I shared why educators should be concerned about the Education bill, which you can watch here. Our kids? learning environment is our teachers? working environment. That?s why I stood up for teachers during the debate on the Jobs bill, which you can watch here. I heard from school districts across Minnesota who are concerned that the Paid Family Leave bill will put significant stress on their budgets, so I shared the impact of this bill on our schools which you can watch here.
