Since taking office, I have worked across the aisle to ensure that Michigan supports the police officers, firefighters, medical professionals, and other first responders who work hard to keep us and our communities safe. That?s why we delivered the most funding in at least 20 years to local cities, villages, townships, and counties, nearly half of which goes directly towards supporting first responders.
First responders include nurses, paramedics, emergency medical services personnel, firefighters, police officers, 911 dispatchers, search and rescue teams, and members of other organizations in the public safety sector. Michigan?s highly trained first responders risk their lives every day to keep our communities safer.
I declared this month Nurses Month to highlight and show our appreciation for our Michigan nurses? dedication, commitment, and contributions to health care all day, every day. Earlier this month, we recognized Firefighters Day to honor firefighters who dedicate their lives to keeping us and our homes safe through their bravery and sacrifice.?

During Police Week, we recognize the hard work of our law enforcement agencies throughout Michigan, from ensuring public safety in our communities and on our roads, to serving as front-line workers during times of disaster, to responding to active shootings. These law enforcement officials have worked hard to make Operation Safe Neighborhoods successful. Their dedication has helped us get nearly 400 illegal firearms out of the hands of criminals before they can be used in the commission of a crime.
During EMS Recognition Week, we focus on our EMS providers who stand ready to provide lifesaving health care to Michigan residents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. EMS responders often encounter people in some of the most stressful moments of their lives. Michigan set a national example by giving first responders the opportunity to carry emergency contraception so survivors of sexual assault can get the care they need.
From providing lifesaving health care services, to protecting our communities, our first responders are an essential part of our everyday lives. I will continue to support our first responders who put their lives on the line to protect others. Let?s keep working together to build a state where every Michigander feels safe.
Sincerely,
|
