Before the Biden administration finally ended Title 42 last week, Senators Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) and Thom Tillis (R-NC), with cosponsors Joe Manchin (D-WV) and John Cornyn (R-TX), filed a bill that would — in effect — extend the harmful Title 42 expulsions for two additional years. Though it has yet to pass the Senate, it’s a real threat, and yet another example of political theater masquerading as policy.

In addition, last week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed SB 1718 into law, a draconian immigration bill that aims to stoke fear in our communities. It will force hospitals to collect data on immigrant patients — among other horrific measures.

In Texas, the state House brought forward several anti-immigrant bills, including HB 7, which passed the House last Wednesday. This extremist bill would create a “Border Protection Unit” that allows vigilantes to track down and arrest immigrants, only furthering Governor Greg Abbott’s nonstop efforts to criminalize our communities.

Anti-immigrant politicians are openly attacking immigrant communities from all angles every day, abusing their power, and weaponizing laws to enact their extreme, xenophobic agenda.

Friend, these attacks are critical reminders that the 2024 elections will have dire consequences. We must do everything in our power to ensure that more anti-immigrant politicians around the country don’t get voted into power, and instead we elect leaders who will fight for our humanity and dignity.
