John, a new bill was just introduced in New York that could gut our Constitutional rights.
That’s right – New York Republicans want to call a dangerous Article V Convention to reshape our Constitution. We have no time to waste. We must act quickly and kill this bill before it gets any further in NY’s legislature.
Article V is a secretive plot funded by millions in right-wing dark money from the likes of the Kochs and Mercers.
Their endgame? Give megadonors and corporations free rein to radically reshape our Constitution against the will of the people – writing far-right policy goals directly into our Constitution, while gutting rights like free speech, the right to protest, and our right to privacy.
The conspirators behind Article V already have plans to pass calls for a convention in the last states they need to succeed. Common Cause won’t let them win – but we need to pull out all the stops to roll back the call in New York, and prepare for the many more calls to come this year.
But John, this is going to be an uphill battle. It’s only May, and we’ve already seen over 100 new bills calling for Article V, with multiple states holding votes every week.
I’m doing all I can to stop each and every call for Article V. Especially since only 6 states stand between us and a gutted Constitution. But it takes a lot to organize the state-by-state grassroots effort needed to stop Article V.
If our opponents succeed, the results could be disastrous. Some of the most corrupt industries are behind the push for Article V. And it’s not hard to imagine what will happen if they successfully call a Convention.
Big Pharma could have unchecked ability to raise the prices of already expensive prescription drugs. Big Oil could bring an oil refinery to your backyard. And corporate interests could get even more influence over our elections.
The good news: Common Cause New York is also pushing a bill that would SHUT DOWN any Article V calls in the state, including this new one. And if we act quickly, we can pass it into law before our opponents know what hit them.
That means we’re headed for a high stakes legislative battle in one of the most expensive states in the country. And with the future of every right we hold dear on the line, I’m ready to pull out all the stops and get this win. But I can’t do it alone.
John, your support could determine which of these bills will pass in New York, but we have to act fast.
Will you chip in $3 or more right now and stop this new call for Article V?
Thank you,
