Addressing the Criminalization of Health Care

Dear John,

It’s been one year since the Dobbs Supreme Court decision leaked. Since then, access to evidence-based care has been compromised for millions of Americans in need of reproductive health care due to state legislatures.

As a physician, I believe personal health decisions should be made by patients and their doctors. Politics have no place in exam rooms and personal health care decisions. The restrictive, conflicting, and often confusing laws across the country interfere with physicians' ability to uphold their commitment to providing quality health care to their patients.

I will always stand up against the criminalization of medical care and put patients first. For more information on my recent press conference on this issue and other updates, see below.

Rep. Bera Hosts Press Event on the Criminalization of Medicine

On May 10th, I hosted a press conference with fellow Doctors in Congress and obstetrician-gynecologists from around the country. We addressed the unprecedented criminalization of medicine and interference in the patient-physician relationship impacting physicians and patients across the country.

We highlighted the challenges faced by obstetrician-gynecologists who strive to fulfill their oath, including those practicing in states with restricted access, those forced to leave their state due to limitations on evidence-based medicine, and those practicing in states overwhelmed by out-of-state patients seeking care.

Bipartisan Immigration Reform

Communities like Sacramento County are home to H-1B and other long-term visa holders who greatly contribute as neighbors, friends, educators, scientists, and doctors.

However, more than 200,000 children of nonimmigrant visa holders, who consider America their only home, face the unsettling prospect of ‘self-deportation’ and family separation due to decades-long backlogs in the immigrant visa system. These young people are part of the fabric of our country, contributing to our economy and enriching our communities.

As the proud son of immigrants, I'm honored to reintroduce the America's Children Act with Representative Deborah Ross (D-NC) and Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) to provide protections for these bright young people.

This legislation has bipartisan support in both the House and Senate.

I am thrilled to announce Nicole Wang from Mira Loma High School as the winner of the 2023 Congressional Art Competition for her work titled War Between Two Great Powers!

My office received a number of beautiful submissions from talented young artists across California’s 6th District, highlighting the remarkable skill nurtured by their dedicated teachers.

I look forward to welcoming Nicole to Washington, D.C. soon and seeing her beautiful artwork hanging in the U.S. Capitol alongside other young artists from across the country!

Federal Grants Workshop!

My office is hosting a Federal Grants Workshop on Wednesday, May 31st from 10:30am – 12:00pm PT at the Carmichael Library (5605 Marconi Ave, Carmichael, CA 95608).

This workshop will feature a Grants 101 presentation, guidance on identifying potential grants, tips and best practices for applying for federal grants, and a Q&A session.

Eligibility for specific federal grants may vary, but opportunities exist for government entities, education organizations, nonprofits, small businesses, and more.
