In April, the U.S. Department of Education released proposed changes to Title IX regulations that aim to clarify transgender students’ eligibility to participate in sports consistent with their gender identity. Williams Institute scholars submitted a comment with recommended revisions to ensure that the rule adequately captures the full extent of protections for transgender youth athletes under Title IX. The comment provided extensive research on sports participation’s benefits for all youth, particularly transgender youth. In addition, it supplied research on the persistent bullying, discrimination, and harassment transgender students experience in K-12 and higher education settings.
