Dear John:

On National Police Week, we are all reminded to thank the brave men and women who risk their lives to protect our communities. Our gratitude for your service, and the sacrifices you and your families make every day, cannot be overstated.

Unfortunately, we live in a time where police officers are constantly under attack for doing their jobs. According to the FBI, 2021 was the deadliest year in two decades for law enforcement officers. This needs to change for the sake of our officers, their families, and their communities, and Congress needs to do everything it can to support local police.

When I talk with the law enforcement officers across the 7th District, they ask me what Congress can do to change the national narrative currently vilifying their position. Republicans are working to change this narrative to one of respect and support, announcing publicly and proudly that we stand with local law enforcement. I was honored to be the voice of this support during a debate on the House Floor this week. You can watch my full remarks here.

Supporting America's Police Officers

This Police Week, House Republicans passed three pieces of legislation to support America's police officers:

  • The Protect Our Law Enforcement with Immigration Control Enforcement or POLICE Act amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to clearly state that the assault of a law enforcement officer is a deportable offense
  • The Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act, which would allow officers to buy retired and surplus service weapons, helping officers and taxpayers alike
  • We also passed a resolution expressing Congress' support for local law enforcement officers and condemning efforts to defund or dismantle local law enforcement agencies

We also introduced the Protect and Serve Act, which would increase penalties for anyone who targets law enforcement officers and purposefully harms them and would also create a penalty of up to 10 years imprisonment for someone who attacks and injures an officer and a penalty of life in prison for someone who kills or kidnaps an officer.
