Dear Friends,

Last week, we took our advocacy efforts to Washington, D.C. With the Farm Bill reauthorization on the horizon, we teamed up with partners across the state to meet with members of Congress about the critical support SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) provides to millions of families. In partnership with Rolling Harvest and Philabundance, we met with the offices of U.S. Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, Chrissy Houlahan, Dwight Evans, Madeleine Dean, and Mary Gay Scanlon. As part of a statewide coalition of anti-hunger organizations, we met with the offices of Senators Bob Casey and John Fetterman to share about our work at the Coalition and our priorities for the upcoming Farm Bill, including the many ways SNAP could be improved to better support low-income families and why it must be protected from any further restrictions.

We are so excited to see everyone at the Philly Brunch Off tomorrow! Who do you think will be this year’s winner? High Street Philadelphia, Honeysuckle Provisions, or our newest contestant (joining in the 11th hour) Fiore Fine Foods?

Limited tickets remain. Can't make it? Please consider donating to support our work to ensure all Philadelphians have the food they need to live healthy lives.

Policy & Advocacy

P-EBT: Pennsylvania has been approved to issue P-EBT benefits to kids ages 0-5 who were receiving SNAP in the 2022-2023 school year. Payments will be made in two stages, with the first likely to go out in the next few weeks.

WIC Public Comment: The Pennsylvania Department of Health is looking for feedback and suggestions about the Pennsylvania WIC Program (Special Supplemental Program for Women, Infants, and Children). This is a great opportunity for former and current WIC participants, stakeholders, and advocates to provide valuable feedback about the challenges and successes of WIC in PA.

PA Food Policy Council: The Pennsylvania Food Policy Council was established in December 2022 to evaluate issues facing PA's food system, coordinate anti-hunger efforts between departments, and facilitate efforts between the public and private sector to improve food security in the state. The first meeting will be on Thursday, May 25th and will be open to the public.

SNAP Hotline In Action

One of our clients called our SNAP Hotline when they didn’t get their April benefits. We completed a new application for them, but it was denied. The reason for the denial was that the client was already receiving benefits. Knowing that this wasn't true, we asked the County Assistance Office (CAO) to check the last time this client received benefits. The CAO found that there was a system error in April that made it so this client's benefits were not distributed. Thankfully, the client knew we would be able to help and reached out to our SNAP Hotline. After the CAO found the system error, the client received their benefits for April.

Our SNAP Hotline team is here to help anyone living in Philadelphia, Bucks, or Chester County with applications and renewals. Think you were wrongly denied SNAP benefits or had your benefits incorrectly reduced? We can help advocate for you.
