In 1998, RG was started by a group of young people who created affinity circles to collectively dig deeper into their wealth, where it came from, and how to be better stewards of it. RG received donations to keep the then-small organization funded. But in 2011, low involvement and a lack of funding for the organization was a major wake-up call. It became clear that RG needed to move beyond individual actions and start organizing young people with wealth around shared values and vision. So, RG became a membership organization in order to move into our collective power, realize our organizing potential, and create the culture shift required for large-scale redistribution.
Over the years, RG has built a membership base of over 1,100 members doing so much badass organizing across the country. In 2022, even though we were behind on funding for much of the year, 98.8% of our income came from members like you and me. Holy shit… that is something to celebrate! And just this week, RG members surpassed over $100M in redistribution commitments for 2023… and we’re not even halfway through the year!
Right now, we have just over one week left in RG’s 2023 annual Spring membership & redistribution pledge drive. While we’ve hit our redistribution pledge goal (yay!), we’re very behind on our membership income goal. We need to raise $900K during the drive, though have only raised ~$200K.
Over the past several years, RG has hit a plateau income-wise. It’s hard to know exactly why, but it’s likely fatigue, RG's work being all remote for 3 years, and a few large multi-year membership contributions winding down because those people spent down (this is actually a win!).
We know that with a base of young people with wealth, we have the collective power to get beyond this plateau and boldly fund RG for the long haul. It’s up to each and every one of us to make this work possible by both showing up and investing in the collective via membership dues.
Will you meet this moment with us, keep RG’s membership-funded money story alive, and move 5% - 10% of your overall redistribution to dues by May 31st?
When RG is well-resourced, we can move so powerfully together. This year, we have two upcoming in-person conferences, the Organizing Summit [[link removed]] and our annual Making Money Make Change conference. We are in the midst of a four-part Transforming Philanthropy Series [[link removed]] , are approaching RG’s first member call (this Sunday!) [[link removed]] and RG 101 of the year (Tues May 30!) [[link removed]] , and we will be launching an RG Internationalism Series [[link removed]] this summer! All of this work and offerings take staff capacity and money.
Appreciate you for being in it with us! Can you, by May 31, become a dues-paying member at 5-10% of your overall giving [[link removed]] - or renew your membership [[link removed]] if you haven’t yet?
In solidarity,
Julia
