Subject: My vote to acquit President Trump

Moments ago, I voted to acquit President Trump.

The criticism from my political opponents has been swift and harsh. Part of that might just be that they are mad that I refused to give into their attempts to pressure me. I also believe that the partisan origins of this proceeding — impeachment passed the House without a single Republican vote — was an indication of some of the weaknesses of their case.

My opponents also don't seem to share my faith in the voters when it comes to deciding who our elected officials should be. It was important for me to take my oath to do impartial justice seriously. I listened closely, I took extensive notes, and I asked questions of both sides. Ultimately, I concluded that the House Managers failed to prove their case. Here is a brief excerpt from the conclusion of my speech:

It has been 230 years since George Washington first took the oath of office, and there are good reasons why during that entire time the Senate has never removed a President. Such a move would not only affect the sitting President but could have unpredictable and potentially adverse consequences for public confidence in our electoral process.

It is my view that, except when extraordinary circumstances require a different result, we should entrust to the people the most fundamental decision of a democracy, namely, who should lead their country.

Friend, I am so grateful to have your support and friendship during this difficult process. Now that this is over, it is time for the Congress to get back to work on the problems that are facing our great country.

Thank you for letting me share my views.

Sincerely,
Senator Susan Collins
