john,
From Yakima, Washington, to Allen, Texas, over 15,671 Americans have already lost their lives this year due to an act of gun violence – including 658 children.
Enough is enough. Parents shouldn't have to worry about guns in schools, and their children shouldn't have to fear for their lives.
As a mom, like many parents, I trust that my son will be safe when he goes to school. But we know that nowhere is really safe in a country that allows guns to get into the hands of people who would do others harm.
That's why I've been fighting to pass common sense measures to reduce gun violence in Congress.
Last year, I was proud to help pass the bipartisan Safer Communities Act to close loopholes that allow firearms to be purchased without background checks. But we still have more work ahead of us – and that includes banning assault weapons federally. A quarter of the guns sold in the US today are assault rifles. That is terrifying.
I voted for an Assault Weapons Ban last year because there's no place for these weapons of war in our communities. While this bill was held up in the Senate, we need to keep working to implement this common sense reform.
We need to take action to protect our communities from preventable gun violence. If you agree, join me in calling for a federal Assault Weapons Ban today →
