I’ll keep this short.

This week, I voted to convict President Donald J. Trump on abuse of power and obstruction of justice. My friend and colleague Doug Jones did so, too.

It was a difficult decision for many of us, but Doug did it knowing that it could cost him his Senate seat in Alabama – a state that Donald Trump won by 30 points.

Like so many of us, Doug voted his conscience. Doug voted to uphold the U.S. Constitution. Doug voted to protect our national security and future elections. He voted to ensure no one is above the law.

He voted for what was right.

But I’ll be blunt: Doug faces one of the toughest re-elections in the country, and we know Donald Trump and right-wing special interests are going to do all that they can to try to beat him.

Our nation, and our Constitution, has been tested before. But we, as Americans, have always met those tests and been stronger for it. The impeachment trial may be over, but this is not the end. I have faith that we will continue the never-ending fight to build a "more perfect Union," together.
