Every year, Members of Congress are invited to bring a guest to the State of the Union. This year, I invited Shane Thompson from Garland. I met Shane at my health care roundtable, where I listened to health experts and local officials. And I also heard personal stories from North Texans like Shane.

Shane shared that she was Type 1 diabetic, and despite the fact that she had a good-paying job, she often struggled with the high price of insulin and other life-saving medications she needed to live a normal, healthy life. 

This is a story that is all too common around North Texas, which is why I invited her to the State of the Union on Tuesday to shine a light on this issue, and highlight the work I’ve been doing to lower the cost of insulin and other prescription drugs. 

In November, I cosponsored the Insulin Price Reduction Act, a bipartisan bill that would reduce the price of insulin for millions of people. One out of four Americans are rationing their medications and this bill would lower costs by 75 percent.

I cosponsored and fought to pass common-sense legislation that will lower prescription drug costs, in addition to legislation that would strengthen our health care system while protecting those with pre-existing conditions.

Lowering the cost of prescription drugs and health care is a top priority for me. With the House acting last year to pass several measures to address this issue, it is more important than ever that we finish the job and deliver real relief for North Texans just like Shane.
