PFAS are all around us, contaminating every part of our planet—including the food we eat and water we rely on.

Nicknamed ‘forever chemicals’ because of their ability to stick around in the environment and accumulate in our bodies, PFAS are associated with a wide range of medical issues — from developmental problems to cancer.

The possible exposure to serious health effects is something that needs to be taken care of immediately. And although the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is taking initial steps to help, their proposal has a dangerous loophole that would allow these ‘forever chemicals’ to contaminate our goods, food and water. ‘Forever chemicals’ are incredibly hard to avoid. They are commonly found in the packaging used for food, but also stain resistant clothing, handbags, upholstered furniture and much more. That’s why we’re disappointed to see dangerous loopholes that would continue their use without regulation.

The EPA’s PFAS proposal includes several exemptions, allowing companies to use these chemicals without notifying regulators. This includes certain uses or lifecycle stages, such as:

When PFAS is used to produce household “articles” — such as carpets;

When PFAS is produced or carried along as an “impurity”; and

When PFAS is created as a byproduct of fuel or waste — including byproducts found in landfills or for enriching soil.

Simply put, exempting any part of the PFAS lifecycle from EPA’s evaluation will result in PFAS exposure. That’s why we need to act now and fight for stronger protections! [link removed]
