The Floridians Protecting Freedom committee has formally announced a drive to try to pass a proposed constitutional amendment in 2024 to ensure abortion rights. The announcement came after the Republican-controlled Legislature this spring approved a bill that seeks to prevent abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.

To get the measure on the ballot, Floridians Protecting Freedom will need to submit at least 891,523 valid petition signatures to the state by Feb. 1.

New Florida Democratic Party Chair, Nikki Fried, has promised to work on the party mechanisms to support small and rural counties, as well as local clubs and caucuses. The party is abandoning a longtime system that granted a few executive committee members enormous power. The changes could have substantial ramifications and drew cheers from Democratic activists and consultants throughout the state. Full articleHERE ([link removed]) .

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Stop fertilizing lawns as of June 1st to help
Indian River Lagoon

** Please accept this reminder that fertilizer restrictions will go into effect on June 1st.
------------------------------------------------------------

We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous (as well as herbicides, pet waste, etc,) are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the stormwater system and, ultimately, into our already impaired Indian River Lagoon.

The fertilizer ordinances passed by our communities prohibit the use of lawn fertilizer between June 1 and Sept. 30. No fertilizer containing phosphorous is to be used at any time. All fertilizers must contain at least 50% slow-release nitrogen. Finally, no fertilizer is to be applied within 10 feet of any water body, a wetland, or from the top of a seawall.

If you use a lawn care provider, please discuss these regulations with the company and ask its employees not to blow grass clippings onto the road or into storm drains. This vegetation contains the nutrients from fertilizer that only adds to the pollution of our waterways. For details regarding the ordinance and fertilizing tips, please see Indian River County’s video ([link removed]) at ircgov.com/publicworks/stormwater/fertilizer.htm or email Alexis Peralta, the county’s stormwater educator and fertilizer enforcement officer, at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) .

For your health and the health of our waterways, complying with the fertilizer ordinance is more important than ever as excess nutrients encourage the growth of harmful and possibly toxic algal blooms. These blooms are already being reported in other parts of our state. Please do your part to improve water quality by obeying the fertilizer ordinance.

Jean Catchpole, Vero Beach, serves on the Water & Lagoon Committee of the Indian River Neighborhood Association.

Video of the Week
Have you seen it? Joe Biden isn’t ready to give up on Florida. This past week, his campaign began running a new election ad in Florida highlighting Biden’s economic record. The addition of FL to the media buy demonstrates the Biden campaign sees many paths to 270 electoral votes and is investing early in building on Biden’s strength in the sunbelt.
