As the deadline for raising the debt ceiling looms, Congressional conservatives have made it clear that they want to make it even harder for hungry people to get the help they need. According to NBC News, not only are they pushing a plan that would place work reporting requirements on Medicaid recipients, they would also expand work reporting requirements on folks receiving SNAP benefits.
SNAP provides low-income recipients an average of only two dollars per meal, and serves mostly children, seniors, people with disabilities, and veterans. Before the pandemic, most families received SNAP for less than a year at a time. Most adult SNAP recipients already work, and the program has strict work requirements, even though numerous studies prove that those requirements don’t increase employment.
The House GOP’s additional work reporting requirements would actually force people to leave their workplaces, travel to government offices to report their work, and lose wages in the process. That’s insane.
Will you contact your representatives and ask them to stand firm against any efforts to inflict tougher work reporting requirements on people who are already struggling?
