Vaquita Survey Happening NOW!
Dear John,
Thanks to your support, the 2023 Vaquita Survey is taking place right now in the Vaquita Refuge! Our supporters know that Sea Shepherd has been fighting to protect the Vaquita Porpoise since 2015. It is the most endangered marine mammal in the world, and this 2023 survey will be the most updated scientific documentation of the Vaquita population. Fourteen highly trained observers have joined Dr. Barbara Taylor, who brings more than 20 years of experience in protecting species around the world.
The 2023 survey is tracking Vaquitas from two ships, the Sea Shepherd vessel M/V Seahorse and Sirena de la Noche. Daily operations include an acoustic monitoring component that will assess where and how active vaquitas are in different areas of the Zero Tolerance Area (ZTA). After the survey, the scientific team will generate an assessment of the status of the Vaquita population for release in early June. Stay tuned!

90% Reduction in IUU announced April 18th
in Washington DC
The Survey comes after an event on April 18th with the Mexican Ambassador to US, Estaban Moctezuma, where we announced that Operation Milagro has achieved a 90% reduction in total hours of illegal fishing activity in the Zero Tolerance Area (ZTA) in the 75 days since the M/V Seahorse was introduced into the campaign. News of the 90% reduction was shared by Sea Shepherd’s Chief Scientist Andrea Bonilla in a program entitled “Progress in Conservation” in Washington D.C. Images, video clips, and Eng/SPA translations of the event are available
