Team,

We know full well that House Republicans are playing with a political hand grenade by holding the U.S. debt ceiling hostage. While we’re still in daily negotiations, so far the offers we’re seeing from the other side are a disaster. We’re talking about deep cuts to everything from education and affordable housing aid, to Customs & Border Protection, to customer service for Social Security and Medicare.

And if those cuts weren’t bad enough, their plan would also cut mental health funding by $606 million. Anyone who spends five minutes watching the news right now can tell you these cuts would come at the worst possible time and would have a terrible impact on our country.

Look, I’ve been in tough negotiations my whole career, from my career in business to my time in the U.S. Senate. The truth is, it’s rare that everyone walks away with everything they want, so we’re going to have to make a deal. But if we’re going to avoid a disastrous default on our debt and untenable cuts to important programs like mental health care, we need to stand strong as Democrats in the coming days.

This GOP-manufactured crisis is a reminder of the consequences we face when Democrats come up short in elections. Right now, I’m working to get us out of this crisis. But I need your help as we head into another important election to make sure we are able to elect Democratic majorities who won’t gamble with our economy or slash mental health funding when it's needed most. Can you chip in today to help us stay on track? [link removed]

Every single family I know – including my own – has been touched by some struggle with mental health. We’ve worked incredibly hard to get more funding for crisis hotlines, train doctors to treat folks with eating disorders, increase response times at crisis hotlines, and improve access to mental health care for all Virginians.

But if the GOP’s plan passes, they’ll undercut all the work we’ve fought for. We can’t let this happen. Contribute today to protect all the progress we’ve made to battle the mental health epidemic and tell the GOP we won’t stand idly by and let them play their dangerous political games. [link removed]

Thank you,
