New funding supports First Responder Warm Line in Newfoundland and Labrador

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is providing funding of approximately $236,000 to Lifewise NL to pilot a one-year dedicated peer support warm line to improve mental health supports and services for paramedics and other first responders in the province. The First Responder Warm Line will be staffed by first responders trained in the delivery of peer support, and will be available 12 hours a day, seven days a week. This new service will provide mental health support to first responders, which will then help them support others.

Progress being made to consolidate ambulance services, says paramedic association

The report from the City of Guelph says changes are in store for several paramedic and fire stations — including the replacement of the Guelph Fire headquarters on Wyndham Street within the next 10 years and the replacement of eight paramedic stations within the next three.

Cause of fire at Almonte paramedic base still unknown, says chief

Nearly two months after fire ripped through Lanark County Paramedic Service's Almonte base, its cause remains unknown. The station, located at 75 Spring Street, sustained significant damage in the March 31 fire, which was battled by Mississippi Mills and Carleton Place fire departments. There were no injuries or damage to equipment, but LCPS Chief Travis Mellema said the service is still in a holding pattern.

First Sober Riders fundraiser for paramedic scholarship fund held in Olds

The Olds Chapter of the Sober Riders Motorcycle Association held an inaugural fundraising ride on Sunday, May 7. The ride was held to raise money for the Marc Moebis EMS Scholarship Fund. Nineteen bikes were involved, with some riders coming from Calgary and Edmonton to participate.

Military, first responders conduct joint training exercise on Vancouver Island

The Department of National Defence is warning residents about a large-scale, multi-agency emergency training exercise that's taking place in various locations across the Comox Valley this week. On Wednesday, 19 Wing Comox will be working with a slew of first responder agencies, including police, firefighters, paramedics and search and rescue teams, to conduct a joint training exercise.

Saskatoon ambulance totaled after collision with SUV

Two paramedics walked away with minor injuries following a crash involving an ambulance and an SUV on Saturday. Medavie West spokesperson Troy Davies says around 8 p.m. an SUV pulled out in front of the paramedics at the intersection of Witney Avenue and 22nd Street West, and the vehicles collided at regular speeds.

Make EMS Week a year-round celebration

EMS Week has always had two purposes. The first is to appreciate EMS providers. The second purpose is to improve public awareness of EMS contributions. Like most recognition days, weeks, or months I believe EMS provider celebration and affirmation should be ongoing throughout the year and not set aside for just one day or week. Why should we confine our recognition to a set schedule?
