** Westminster Despatches
------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Resident,
I hope you enjoyed the historic Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Since the Coronation, it has been a busy period in Westminster, and I want to update you on the latest work that I am doing as your Member of Parliament.
As you may know, the Government recently announced measures to modernise primary care, which will help many across Erewash access a GP appointment when they need one. Under the Primary Care Plan, the Government will implement measures to tackle the ‘8am rush’, making it easier for people to contact their GP; provide more services in pharmacies; deliver more GPs and appointments whilst at the same time cutting unnecessary NHS bureaucracy. The Primary Care Plan will help reduce pressures on A&Es, improve the efficiency of the NHS and will help people in Erewash live healthier lives. You can view my contribution to a parliamentary debate here ([link removed]) .
The high prevalence of serious and persistent Anti-Social Behaviour, particularly in our town centres, is a key concern for many residents living and working in Erewash. In Parliament, I recently asked a question about what steps the Ministry of Justice is taking through the criminal justice system to tackle alcohol and drug related crime. You can view it here ([link removed]) . I also had the opportunity to ask the Secretary of State for Justice what his department is doing to improve prosecution rates for serious sexual offences involving minors. You can access my contribution via the link ([link removed]) .
As I’m sure many football fans will know, Long Eaton United recently secured promotion with a memorable 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Stockton Town. I would like to congratulate Ian Deakin and his team on this fantastic achievement. Long Eaton United even received a special congratulatory message from the Prime Minister. You can view his message here ([link removed]) .
For those residents who travel by bus, there is great news for you. The Department for Transport has announced the £2 single bus fare has been extended until the end of October to help passengers with the cost of living. After this, the price of a single fare will be capped at £2.50 until November 2024. It is the Conservative Government that is helping you get around for less. You can view the routes included in the cap here ([link removed]) .
In the constituency, I always enjoy visiting local businesses and attending events. Last week I managed to pop along to this year’s Spring Long Point to see the fantastic exhibitions and show my support to our brilliant furniture makers. Long Eaton is well known globally as the home of fine upholstery. I also visited the Long Eaton Branch of the Royal British Legion. Here, I met with local members over lunch and discussed the important role that the Legion plays in supporting service men and women as well as their families. If you are interested in joining the UK’s largest armed forces charity, then please visit the following website ([link removed]) .
I want to make residents aware of Royal Mail’s new missed delivery service. If Royal Mail can’t deliver an item to your address because nobody was there to sign for it, or it was too big for your letterbox, they will now automatically attempt to make a redelivery. If you receive a “something for you card”, you will now be able to go online and book a redelivery date. To find out more information about this service please click here ([link removed]) .
For those of you who are over State Pension age and on a low income, you could be missing out on Pension Credit. This provides extra money to help with living costs. You can check if you or someone you know might be eligible for Pensions Credit by visiting this website ([link removed]) .
Finally, I would like to remind residents who have not yet received a first or second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, to come forward and get jabbed before the offer ends on Friday 30 June 2023. If you would like to book an appointment, please follow this link ([link removed] ) .
With best wishes,
Maggie Throup MP
Member of Parliament for Erewash
