Bonus Episode 2: The Impact

State legislators and other policymakers are trying to change reading instruction, requiring it to align with cognitive science research about how children learn to read. Several of them say they were motivated by our Sold a Story podcast.



Six states passed laws to change the way reading is taught since Sold a Story was released last fall. At least a dozen other states are considering similar efforts.



In our second bonus episode, released today, Emily Hanford and Christopher Peak detail the progress.

More than a third of states consider reading legislation this year

In the past six months, legislators in at least 18 states have proposed ways to better align reading instruction with scientific research. As of May 17, six states have signed reading bills into law this year.
